GUERRER@X FOOD JUSTICE PROGRAM
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, HOMEY staff immediately responded to the food insecurity needs in the neighborhood following neighbors and youth inquiring about food support. Many youth and families in our program communicated that their families were facing food insecurity. What started as a first responder approach from HOMEY to meet the needs of our participating youth, their families and local neighbors have since grown to feed nearly a thousand households weekly.
In 2022-23, HOMEY’s Guerrer@s De La Ciudad (City Warriors) Food Program has directly curated, packed, and distributed over 14,000 grocery bags to local households. Thanks to our subcontracts and partnerships with Califa Produce, Arcadios Produce, Pie Ranch, Fresh Approach, Mission Meals Coalition and our newest vendor Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates. HOMEY has incorporated food into our service delivery system and it has integrated individuals and families from our and partner group organizations into many of our core services.

- Our collaborative program approach with our partners is to continue our successful market model that we piloted from 2021- 2023 where clients are able to pick and choose their groceries and who are also able to contribute suggestions and feedback.
- Provide high quality social services at La Ofrenda (HOMEY & MMC). Through our continued food justice work and input from HOMEY’s Guerrer@’s de La Ciudad, and MMC clients, our pilots have indicated that market-style food access is a low-cost but high-impact approach to food access. We’ve learned and are eager to continue market-style programming by managing three service days, on a biweekly calendar where clients will be able to continue choosing dry-good and produce items.
- Provide program participants access to dry goods, produce, dairy and protein items that are reflective of their communities and with the opportunity to try new food items that have high nutritional value that they would otherwise not be able to due to cost or lack of exposure. Our dry-good shelves have serviced as a positive indicator and example of the power of dignity of choice. Programming at La Ofrenda currently stocks red, brown, black and lentil legumes and we have seen the outpour of client satisfaction due to the diversity of our client's diet and backgrounds being reflected in the grocery menus and products they’re provided. A multi-day and biweekly approach will also allow our team to ensure each and every single client is provided direct service and care. Each day will be designed to cater to each client and households nutritional and service needs.
- To further expand on the market model at La Ofrenda, HOMEY & MMC co-host demographic specific markets to ensure client satisfaction and specific needs can be met with a dignified approach.
